EVERETT — Two bikini baristas are in hot water after their arrests this week for investigation of prostitution and violation of the city’s adult-entertainment codes.

The scantily clad baristas were working for Hillbilly Hotties, which bills itself on the Web as “the HOTTEST LINGERIE/BIKINI stand in Snohomish County!”

As a social scientist, the recent uproar over the bikini clad baristas is analytical gold. What I would like to do in this short commentary is what some scholars have termed “public anthropology,” that is, a type of anthropology that engages the public in social science.

What works for one community doesn’t necessarily mean it’s appropriate for a neighboring community. That is what the owners of Hillsboro-based Dream Girl Espresso (it’s known as “Bikini Coffee” at its Hillsboro location) are learning as they deal with a small hornet’s nest of protest following the July 25 opening of their second coffee kiosk, this one in Forest Grove.

It was hard to tell who the drivers were honking at — the young women in bikinis or the ones holding protest signs and a baby.

Both groups were standing on the corner of 19th Avenue and Elm Street Thursday, July 25, waving at cars and trying to get a message across with their handwritten signs.
