Coffee stand sparks debate over sex, religion and conflicting facets of feminism

It was hard to tell who the drivers were honking at — the young women in bikinis or the ones holding protest signs and a baby.

Both groups were standing on the corner of 19th Avenue and Elm Street Thursday, July 25, waving at cars and trying to get a message across with their handwritten signs.

At most coffee places, someone might ask if you’d like a scone with that.

In Spokane, it’s getting more complicated.

The City Council is about to debate regulations on places with baristas who wear considerably less than a scone. Bikini baristas have surfaced in several cities, but Spokane seems to be exploring a more open range of Northwest coffee culture.

EVERETT, Wash. — A sergeant with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for allegedly tipping off the owners of seven bikini barista stands to scheduled police surveillance.

As a part of the investigation, eight others involved with the bikini stands in question were arrested on accusations of prostitution and lewd conduct, said Deputy Chief Dan Templeman with the Everett Police Department.
